The ERASMUS IP Archaeological Landscapes (PreDU) is primarily offered for graduate second cycle (MA) and third cycle (PhD etc.) of students with a first cycle (BA) degree in any of the disciplines involved in the development of design proposals for the preservation and use of archaeological landscapes in the higher education institutions of the participating countries. These disciplines include archaeology, conservation, architecture, landscape architecture, surveying, civil engineering, urban design, architectural restoration, sociology, economy, among others. This target group of students would be expected to participate in the programme fully and proactively, in defining and developing design proposals for the preservation and use of archaeological landscapes.

Agoritsa-Anna TZELIOU (2nd cycle, civil engineering, AUTH) holds a degree in civil engineering from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki with specialization in the division of structural engineering. Agoritsa’s Diploma Thesis entitled “Restoration study of a late 19th century building in Thessaloniki”, comprises the assessment of the bearing capacity of the structure and research of the appropriate reinforcement solutions. Currently, she is a student of the AUTH Interdepartmental Post graduate Program on Protection, Conservation and Restoration of Architectural Monuments. Her main research interests are the seismic behavior and rehabilitation of monumental structures and the properties and behavior of materials used for interventions in historic structures and monuments.
Aikaterini MANOLOPOULOU (2nd cycle, civil engineering, AUTH) says: “I am a civil engineer with a specialization in structural engineering (AUTH 2012). Currently, I am attending the MSc interdisciplinary program of “Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Monuments” at AUTH- Department of Architecture. Throughout my studies I developed an interest in traditional building materials.“
Alexandros KOUSTAS (2nd cycle, civil engineering, AUTH) says: “I am a civil engineer with specialization in structural engineering (AUTH 2010) and a current student of Master’s programme in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) “Protection Maintenance and Restoration of Monuments and Cultural Heritage” in architecture department.“
Alexandros ΚONSTANTA (2nd cycle, conservation, AUTH) Konstanta Alexandros graduated from University Ecclesiastical Academy of Thessaloniki in 2011 where he studied Management and Preservation of Cultural and Ecclesiastical Relics, and he is currently attending the interdisciplinary MSc programme “Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Monuments” at the AUTH School of Architecture. His interests include Conservation and protection of art works, Art and Archaeology.
Anastasia DOLOGLOU (2nd cycle, archaeology, AUTH) has BA in Archaeology-History of Art, UOA 1998; Diploma in Arts, Bristol U. 1999. Anastasia says: “I am currently attending the MSc interdisciplinary programme of “Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Monuments” at the AUTH-School of Architecture. I practiced archaeology for several years, as a temporary staff of the Greek Ministry of Culture, especially in projects related to the restoration and preservation of cultural heritage.”
Anastasia PITYTZOGIA (2nd cycle, civil engineering, AUTH) Diploma in civil engineering, graduate student in Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Monuments in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Aspasia KAROZOU (2nd cycle, civil engineering, AUTH) Aspasia Karozou has a diploma in civil engineering with specialization in geotechnical engineering (AUTH 2009) and is a current student of master’s programme in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) “Protection Maintenance and Restoration of monuments and cultural heritage” in architecture department. She is particularly interested in the materials used in restorations, public awareness campaigns for preservation of cultural heritage worldwide, and geotechnical problems that might appear in archaeological sites of study.
Atahan ÜNAL (1st cycle, architecture, TUWIEN) says: “Born and raised in Izmir, graduated from ‘Izmir Atatürk Lisesi’ (High School) and majoring in Architecture at Vienna University of Technology, I am highly interested in Eryhtrai/Ildırı Archaeological Landscapes programme. I am happy to be in Izmir for this project, and very eager to learn more and make researches in my home country.”
Atila KILIÇ (1st cycle, architecture, TUWIEN) says: “My name is Atila and I study architecture at the TU in Vienna. I’m devoting my life for my studies and projects and I’m looking forward to enjoy the two weeks in Izmir!”
Aygün KALINBAYRAK-ERCAN (3rd cycle, history of architecture, METU) says: “I am an architect and I have an MA degree in Architectural History. I am currently a PhD candidate in the Graduate Program of Architectural History in METU. My main research interests are Roman architecture and urbanization. In my MA thesis, I studied the impact of architectural benefaction on Roman urbanization and now, I am focusing my studies on Roman architecture in Lycia. Since my studies involve meticulous investigation of architectural remains in archaeological sites, I believe Archaeological Landscapes programme will be a great opportunity to enhance my knowledge about the preservation and use of archaeological landscapes.”
Azime ALADAĞ (1st cycle, architecture, IZTECH) says: “I am an architecture student studying 7th semester in Izmir Institute of Technology, which is very close to the project site, and I know the importance of the place historically and archaeologically, because in one of my classes we visited there and we also studied on the site. I am very happy to have a chance to study and learn more professionally for such an extensive, international project in my hometown as an architecture student who is very interested in archaeology!”
Daniel WIESER (2nd cycle, architecture, TUWIEN) says: “Last term I participated in a module concerning the evaluation and analysis of historical monuments. I was introduced into the modern cultural heritage preservation in regard of all the different values this field combines. I gained insight into historical building materials and their structural-physical properties. The lectures evoked my interest for the preservation of ancient structures, to find design solutions to frame the archaeological site with subtle and appropriate architectural elements and in addition how to make them accessible for tourism.”
Dilara GÖKÇEN (2nd cycle, architecture, IZTECH) says: “I participated in a certificate programme titled ‘City Analysis/Interaction Between Contemporary Architecture and Archaeological Ruins’ in partnership with İzmir Institute of Technology and Vienna University of Technology in 2011. During my education period, I also joined some archaeological trips related to site analysis and design decisions. I believe that before taking design decisions, having a thorough knowledge of the history of existing places is crucial. Efthymia ROUKA (2nd cycle, archaeology, AUTH) says: “I graduated from AUTH, school of History and Archaeology in 2006 and in 2007 I started my first master in Classical Archaeology at the same school. My second master, which I will be finishing next June, is about protection and preservation of monuments. So far I have worked in a few research programmes concerning pottery from Macedonia and also ancient theaters. These research programmes were organized by the Center for the Greek Language, department of the Ministry of Education, which is based in Thessaloniki, Greece.”
Emine Çiğrem ASRAV (2nd cycle, architecture-restoration, METU <emineasrav@gmail.com>) says: “I graduated from the architecture department of METU. I am doing master’s on conservation and preservation in METU and I will start writing a thesis on archaeological remains in rural environments in the following semester.“
Esra TEKDAL (3rd cycle, geodesy, ITU) Geomatics engineer and civil engineer (double major). Currently a PhD candidate at Istanbul Technical University, Institute of Science and Technology, Geomatics Engineering program.
Evanthia-Christina TSIRONI (2nd cycle, civil engineering, AUTH) As a structural engineer, her interest lies in the reinforcement of historic buildings with modern and compatible materials and techniques. During her academic years, she has carried out several assignments concerning the analysis of historic structures under seismic forces. She is currently attending the MSc Interdisciplinary Program of “Preservation and Restoration of Architectural Monuments”, School of Architecture, AUTH.
Federica GOTTA (3rd cycle, architecture, POLIBA) Architect. Graduated at Polytechnic of Bari (thesis: “Ialisos. The temple of Athana Polias and Zeus Polieus”- supervisors prof. G. Rocco, prof. M. Livadiotti, prof. R. Belli, prof. M. Beccu, prof. R. Carullo); Specialized at Postgraduate School in Architectural and Environmental Heritage at Sapienza, University of Rome (thesis: “The archaeological site of the acropolis of Fileremo in Rhodes: from analysis to design choices”- supervisors prof. G. Carbonara, prof. G. Rocco, prof. G. Bulian); PhD Student at Polytechnic of Bari. Engaged in numerous archaeological campaigns in the areas of the Dodecanese and recently in Sicily, the fields of interest of my scientific research are the design in archaeological areas (open-air museums) and all the related issues of protection, enhancement, restoration and understanding of ancient monuments.
Georgia THEOFANIDOU (2nd cycle, archaeology, AUTH) says: “After graduating from AUTH School of History and Archaeology in 2008, I studied Art Conservation and I am currently attending the MSc interdisciplinary program of “Protection Conservation and Restoration of Architectural Monuments” at the AUTH-School of Architecture. I practiced archaeology and conservation for several years, as a temporary staff of the Greek Ministry of Culture, in rescue excavations and in projects related to the restoration and preservation of cultural heritage.“
Gonca URAL (2nd cycle, architecture, IZTECH) says: “I have been practicing architectural restoration in conservation sites around Izmir for four years and interested in spatial and social problems in conservation areas. Since we had made spatial analyses in Ildırı in 2012 we decided to make a collective memory and oral history related architectural research in Ildırı with my thesis advisor. In order to determine existing and possible future problems, I concentrated on social and collective memory in order to ‘understand’ a place through its past, present and projected future. Ildırı is chosen as the case study site due to having urban, natural and archaeological protection areas overlapped each other, and also having similar places as location and values nearby, which may be compared as social and spatial changes they had and continue to have by the inspired interest and gained popularity lately.”
Gülşah BAYAZİT (1st cycle, architecture, IZTECH) says: “I am an architecture department student in 8th semester. I study in IZTECH. I have a special interest in arheological research. I want to do my master on archeology and this course will be a good opportunity for me to take that decision. Moreover for my architectural education, it is a different experiment. On the other hand I will be also proud of joining this organization in my country and in my city!”
Işılay SHERIDAN ([to start] 2nd cycle, architecture-restoration, IZTECH-METU) says: “My interest in archaeological fieldwork started in 2009, after completing 2 years of architectural education, in Mersin for Olba ancient city, with the documentation of the ancient Nymphaeum. I have been working for the Teos Archaeology Project conducted by Prof. Dr. Musa Kadıoğlu from Ankara University Archaeology Department since 2010. There, I have been working on the measurements and drawings of the odeon, cistern, Dionysos temple, temenos wall, and theatre. I also prepared the 3d modellings of Nysa Gerontikon for Kadıoğlu’s monograph now in press. I am going to start my Master’s education this September at METU, and wish to be specialized in the field of restoration of ancient theatres.”
Jennifer BRUNNER (1st cycle, architecture, TUWIEN) Main interest are the history of architecture and building archaeology especial of ancient buildings and settlements and the impact to later epochs. Research about the settlement of Karpuzlu and the ancient city Alinda. Furthermore interest of the medieval buildings and settlements in Europe, especially the constructions and the measuring of roof structures. Research and documentation of the construction and building techniques of the roof structures of the Michalerkirche in Vienna from the 16th century. Special interest is how to deal with presentation and development of cultural heritage and how to do architectural interventions.
Marianthi VAVALIOU (2nd cycle, archaeology, AUTH) Graduated from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2008 where she studied History and Archaeology and she is currently attending the interdisciplinary MSc programme “Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Monuments” at the AUTH School of Architecture. Between 2010 and 2012 she worked in rescue excavations in Northern Greece, as a temporary staff of the Greek Ministry of Culture. Her interests include Archaeology, Art, Conservation and protection of art works, monuments and archaeological sites, Preservation and site management of archaeological sites.
Maria-Zinovia KANELLI (2nd cycle, architecture, AUTH) MA student in Conservation and Restoration of Historical Buildings and Sites, interested in public awareness campaigns for preservation of cultural heritage
Merve DEMİRÖZ (2nd cycle, city planning-restoration, METU) is city planner , student in the master program of restoration at METU working at Sagalassos Archaeological Research Project.
Mihriban SARI (2nd cycle, architecture-restoration, METU) says: “I am a graduate student in restoration program at METU.“
Milto SKORDELI (2nd cycle, civil engineering, AUTH) says: “Having graduated from Aristoteleio University of Thessaloniki, taking my diploma as a civil engineer and also the postgraduated from the Antiseismic (i.e., Earthquake Resistant) Design of Structures (ASTE) program, my initial interest in cultural monuments led me to participate also in the postgraduate program of “Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Monuments”. My enthusiasm and desire to assist in many fields of science and also my specific interest in cultural and archaeological monuments led me to participate to this program as I feel really excited about the prospect to attend it.“
Nafsika SAKELLARIOU (2nd cycle, civil engineering, AUTH) Studied civil engineering with specialization in structural engineering at AUTH, currently in the 3rd semester of M.Sc. ‘Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Monuments’, School of Architecture at AUTH. Nafsika says: “Building restoration attracted my interests after attending a seminar about “Conservation of Monuments of Istanbul”. Since living in a city with numerous monuments, it is easy to understand the need for maintenance and utilization of these exquisite constructions in modern society. Izmir is a promising opportunity to have experience in an international environment with people from diverse cultural destinations. In order to preserve monuments you have to respect cultural differences and know more about the history of each monument of every civilization.”
Nikola FREISSMUTH (2nd cycle, architecture, TUWIEN) says: “I am an Architecture student from Vienna, Austria. This will be one of my last courses before my diploma… I hope to find some inspirations. Also I am really looking forward to working with students from all around Europe.”
Nil Nadire GELİŞKAN (2nd cycle, history of architecture, ITU) says: “After graduating from IZTECH, I started to do master at ITU in the department of History of Architecture. It is good to have such an opportunity in Izmir since I am working at IZTECH as a research assistant. Although my research subject is not directly related with Archaeological Landscapes, because of taking some courses about antiquity and history I am really interested with designing, using and preservation of archaeological sites. I attended before a student exchange programme via Erasmus as an undergraduate in Politecnico di Bari for one academic year. It would be a pleasure to cooperate with another Erasmus programme.”
Olga GAROUFA (2nd cycle, survey engineering, AUTH) Olga Garoufa has a diploma in Survey Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and is currently a student of master’s programme “Protection, Maintenance and Restoration of Monuments and Cultural Heritage” in the Department of Architecture. . Olga’s research interests focus on documentation and recording of archaeological findings, especially using innovative, more accurate and efficient surveying methods, geophysical prospecting methods and GIS use and management in the archaeological site.
Özüm İTEZ (3rd cycle, architectural history, METU) says: “I graduated from Landscape Architecture (BSc., Ankara University) in 2006 and Urban Design (MSc., Middle East Technical University) in 2009. As of 2012 I am a PhD candidate in the Graduate Program of Architectural History in the Middle East Technical University. During my graduate studies I worked on a design studio project that focused on designing and planning the historic landscape of the Trojan War. The project consisted of designing several journeys through space and time in order to uncover this unique ‘legendary’ landscape of Homer’s Iliad. It was a thrilling and fruitful experience and I believe by participating and working on Archaeological Landscapes programme, I would further enhance my understanding, planning and designing of historical heritage sites and places.

Selin HÜLAGÜ (1st cycle, civil engineering, EGE) says: “I study civil engineering at Ege University. It is my 5th semester and I also studied in Germany for 1 semester via Erasmus.I worked for 2 companies last year, one is a government company, the other is an international company. I would like to say that I can suit in a multicultural working and learning environment easily. It is a pleasure to get the chance of learning different cultures and working techniques for widening my perspective. Also it makes a great challenge to work in an international area, so I really want to be a part of it!”
Semra HORUZ (3rd cycle, architecture, TUWIEN) says “For my bachelor studies I graduated from Bilkent University, Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design in 2008. I received my master’s degree from the Graduate Program of Architectural History at METU in 2010. My master’s thesis was an attempt to utilize Peter Greenaway’s contemporary cinematography as a tool to capture and juxtapose the two/three dimensional representations of the books, the bodies and the spaces in a historical frame. I am now pursuing my doctoral studies in Vienna University of Technology in the department of History of Architecture and Building Archaeology. My academic interests are the architectural history of the body and film studies, history of reading, spatiality in cinematic representation, visuality in architectural history and city representation techniques (panorama, photography).”
Sevgi Vefa TAÇYILDIZ (2nd cycle, regional planning – urban conservation, YTU) says: “I am from Yıldız Technical University – Regional Planning – Urban Conservation Department. My bachelor degree is Landscape Architecture (Ankara University) and I’m still working on my master thesis which is about “Ecological Criteria on Historical Centers”. So I’m really interested in this project and glad to be included.”
Sıla AKMAN (2nd cycle, architecture-restoration, METU) says: “I have graduated from BS. Architecture, METU and now I am MS student in Restoration and Preservation of Historical Monuments, METU. Moreover, I have worked at Sagalassos Archaeological Research Project for three campaigns.”
Stavros ATSIKPASIS (2nd cycle, civil engineering, AUTH) has diploma in civil engineering with specialization in structural engineering (AUTH 2011), current student of Master’s programme in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) “Protection Maintenance and Restoration of Monuments and Cultural Heritage” in architecture department. Stavros says: “I’m glad I have the opportunity to participate in such an interesting programme and I’m looking forward to expanding my knowledge about the preservation and use of archaeological landscapes.“
Stefania POLLONE (3rd cycle, architecture, UNINA) architect, PhD student in History and Conservation of Cultural and Environmental Heritage. I am engaged in scientific research – concerning theoretical, technical and applied problems related to issues of protection and conservation of architectural, archaeological and environmental heritage – and restoration design.
Süreyya TOPALOĞLU (2nd cycle, architecture-restoration, METU) says: “As an architect still doing my master degree in restoration department, I try to participate such kind of programmes and workshops as much as possible. I spent a few months of my life working in archaeological sites, twice in Sagalassos and once in Burgaz.”
Vera GALANIDOU (2nd cycle, civil engineering, AUTH) has a diploma in civil engineering with specialization in structural engineering (AUTH 2011). Since September 2012, she is attending the MSc interdisciplinary program of “Protection Conservation and Restoration of Architectural Monuments” at the AUTH-School of Architecture. She is specially interested in restoration materials’ science as well as structural strengthening of monuments. Vera says: “I am looking forward to participate in the program and get into different approaches and points of view about the protection of archaeological landscapes.”
Yavuz ERSÖZ (3rd cycle, civil engineering, IZTECH) says: “I am a PhD student in Izmir Institute of Technology. My research topic is construction materials , especially self consolidating concrete. Also I am interested in historical building materials.”
Zeynep ÖZÇAM (1st cycle, city and regional planning, IZTECH) says: ”I am Zeynep Özçam who is a 4th year bachelor student in City and Regional Planning at Izmir Institute of Technology (IZTECH). In my academic career I want to deal with conservation planning for urban spaces having historical and archaeological character.”
